SSL Certificates

An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates the identity of a website and encrypts communication between the server and the visitors’ browser. It establishes a secure communication channel which protects sensitive data, such as login details, payment details and other personal information.

When a user visits a website that has a valid SSL Certificate, the browser verifies that the certificate is authentic and that the website is safe, displaying a green padlock symbol in the browser bar.

How to renew an SSL Certificate

When to renew an SSL Certificate

SSL Certificates can only be renewed within the 30 days prior to their expiry date.
Depending on the type of certificate being renewed, verification can take several days; for this reason, it is important to start the renewal process early.

An SSL Certificate that has expired cannot be renewed: in this event, a new one must be purchased, as explained in the guide.

How to renew

To renew an SSL Certificate:
  1. sign in to your Customer Area, as explained in the guide
  2. check your services in the Services tab
  3. click on Details next to the service to be renewed:

  4. click on Renew;
  5. check the order summary and Continue;
  6. check the invoicing details, then Continue;
  7. select the payment method and confirm by pressing Continue: once the renewal process has been completed, you will find a summary of the order details.

What to do once the renewal process has been completed

Once the SSL Certificate renewal has been completed, follow these steps to get your certificate:

step 1

Generate the renewed SSL Certificate (via email or the Customer Area)

as explained in the guide

step 2

Check the contact details

depending on the type of certificate; see the guide for more details.

step 3

Enter the CSR

if you already have one, or generate one using the generator: for further information, see the guide.

Entering the CSR is a critical step in the renewal of an SSL Certificate

step 4

Choose the domain validation type

according to your requirements, as explained in the guide.

step 5

Validate the domain

following the process required by the validation method selected (e.g. .txt file, change on DNS) in the previous step.

step 6

Wait

for the activation process to be completed; time may vary according to the type of Certificate selected:
  • DV: this type does not require any additional checks: the SSL Certificate is generated straight away;
  • OV: this type of Certificate requires a series of checks on the data provided: if required, you may be contacted by the person performing the checks;
  • EV: involves the same checks required by an OV SSL Certificate, so you may be contacted by the person performing the checks. For an EV SSL Certificate, download the required form using the "Download PDF" button, then complete and sign the form and email it to [email protected].
For further details on the domain validation process, see the guide.

step 7

Download the SSL Certificate

from the email received from the nominated technical contact or from the Customer Area.

step 8

Install the SSL Certificate

on the server hosting the domain: for more details on how to install an SSL Certificate, follow the instructions in the guide.
